A Unique Research Project
During Anne's time working with The Centre for Clergy Care and Congregational Health she undertook projects to assist with research about the church in Canada. Only fairly recently did she complete this last one, after she finished working at the Centre. It is a look at the Presbyterian Church in Canada's membership, baptism, church and mission numbers as well as Sunday school statistics for years they were recorded. The resulting data is here, with the years chosen to align with Census Canada data and midpoints of those years, as well as key times such as the time surrounding Church Union, when many Presbyterian Churches opted to join the newly forming United Church of Canada.
So why bother doing this work? It is hoped that researchers will find answers and discover intriguing things about the Presbyterian Church in Canada, such as what happened to a single congregation over time, or a Presbytery, or a Synod. Or to gain an understanding of times of growth and decline and where this happened across the country. Or to just come to appreciate the rich history of this denomination.
This project was a labour of love and hopefully will assist students and other researchers as they consider where the Presbyterian Church in Canada is now and how that relates to its past. Feel free to e-mail me with questions, but first please read the notes explaining how to understand the format of the data so that you can find what you are seeking. Also, please take note of the disclaimers about the limits of a project this size.
Huge thanks to the Rev. Dr. Stuart Macdonald at Knox College for this interesting project and for all the guidance, enthusiasm and support he offered throughout.
Introductory notes to help you navigate the data in each year's spreadsheet. To find a particular item in a particular year, you can search the spreadsheet by clicking on "Edit" in your toolbar and then clicking on "Find" and adding what you are searching for in the box that appears in the top right of your screen (i.e. the name of a congregation or Presbytery).
